Morris County Towns: Randolph Twp.

Once a cluster of distinct farming communities and lakefront resorts, Randolph Township in Morris County has grown rapidly in the last 25 years into a largely residential suburban community. Beautiful green forests, rolling hills and fishing streams reminiscent of a typical New England town best explain the natural beauty of Randolph Township, located entirely within the Highlands of the Appalachian Mountains.

Founded in 1805, Randolph Township includes neighborhoods such as Ironia, Mount Freedom, Shongum, Millbrook and Mount Fern. Randolph Township is a largely residential town which boasts excellent schools, active recreation programs and a wealth of citizen volunteers. The town was named for Hartshorne Fitz-Randolph, one of the area's original landowners who settled here in the 1700s. Founders Day is celebrated each year on Nov 13.

What makes Randolph Township appealing is that you can live in the country and still be accessible to urban businesses and cultural places.

Perhaps most cherished by parents and children alike is the Randolph Township Summer camp program for those in kindergarten through grade 8. This day camp, often called "Randolph Resort," provides a full-day program at a reasonable price. Daily field trips are scheduled each day to destinations such as amusement parks, fishing ponds and sandy beaches.

In addition to Randolph's reputation for excellent Summer and year-round community activities, the Randolph School District "has a well-deserved reputation for excellence," states Ross Danis, assistant superintendent of schools.

The town has six schools: a high school, middle school and four elementary schools. "The district has a commitment to the three A's: academics, athletics and the arts," says Danis, "and it is a rigorous, competitive and challenging school district." According to Danis, more than 90 percent of the eligible students take the SATs and continue to score among the highest in the country.

For higher education, County College of Morris is located on Route 10. It is a source of knowledge, cultural events and even assistance for small business owners in town.

With the help of the town's in-house planning staff, Randolph will soon have a quaint and artfully designed village center, which will connect to the newly implemented path system. The center will provide a variety of small shops for goods and services, as well as professional office space, restaurants and retail stores. Anchor stores for the village center will include Grand Union and the First Morris Bank.

The township has been a leader in preservation of open space, through a dedicated local tax and the use of county and state funds. Freedom Park on Carrell Road is the town's largest recreational facility which boasts a new children's playground. Also, athletic fields are located at Heistien Park on Doby Road and Fredom Park on Millbrook Road which connects to Patriot's Path.

Transportation
Located in the heart of Morris County, Randolph Township is well connected to the region by Route 10, which connects to Interstates 80 and 287. Newark is 25 miles to the northeast, New York City is 32 miles to the east and Philadelphia is 85 miles to the southwest. Rail service is available in neighboring Dover Township. Newark, NYC, The Meadowlands, and Newark Airport are within easy reach.

Recreation Facilities
Randolph Township is deeply committed to providing the very best in recreational amenities to its residents. The town is preparing to spend More than $2.7 million in the creation of Freedom Park. When completed, this passive and active state-of-the art recreational facility will include fields for soccer, the fastest-growing sport, as well as the more traditional games of football and baseball. Other sports facilities include basketball and volleyball courts. The park's hub for social gatherings will take place at a planned pavilion with various picnic facilities. Highly praised stage productions are presented frequently by the Brundage Playhouse community theater group. Their productions are held usually at the playhouse on Carrell Road.

Shopping
For current shopping needs, Randolph Township residents enjoy the convenience of popular stores on the newly paved and reengineered Route 10, including Kmart and Pathmark, and the soon-to-open Staples and Super A&P. Sears, Macy's, JC Penney and Lord & Taylor are found at the nearby Rockaway Townsquare Mall, and the Roxbury and Ledgewood malls provide The Home Depot, Wal-Mart, The Wiz, Lines 'N' Things, ShopRite and more. Only minutes away is the downtown Morristown shopping district with over 200 shops, services and restaurants.
